    Description

This decorative Japanese hagoita is a remarkable piece of traditional textile art, crafted using the oshi-e technique. The female figure, dressed in a silk 絹 kimono, is brought to life in relief through meticulous layering and padding of textiles.

The floral motifs represent sakura 桜, Japan's iconic cherry blossoms. The harmony of colors – deep reds, delicate pinks, and golds – gives the whole an elegant and expressive presence.

Designed as a decorative wall object, this hagoita embodies the Japanese aesthetic of the Shōwa era.

    What is a hagoita?

Originally, the hagoita 羽子板 was a wooden racket used for a traditional Japanese New Year's game. Very early on, some hagoita became purely decorative, offered as good luck charms and displayed in Japanese homes.

Over time, they transformed into true artistic mediums, adorned with female figures, kabuki actors, or symbolic scenes, and became particularly fashionable decorative objects for the New Year.

    The oshi-e technique

The oshi-e 押絵 is a Japanese decorative technique consisting of creating textile relief images using fabrics – often silk – wadding, and rigid supports. The Hagoita is made using this oshi-e technique.

    🦝 Our opinion

A piece as we like them at KOGEDO: expressive, refined, and profoundly Japanese. The quality of the silks, the sakura motif, and the subtle relief make it a powerful decorative object, capable of transforming a living room. A beautiful example of ancient Japanese textile art, both decorative and rich in symbols.
