Exterior:
Vintage men’s haori (羽織 / haori) in a blue-grey wool blend, with a dense, uniform weave, enlivened by a fine, traditional kikkō (亀甲) pattern. This hexagonal design, inspired by a tortoise shell, belongs to the classic repertoire of Japanese motifs and adds a more sophisticated, yet very understated, style to the fabric.
The fabric has a lovely structure, a dry and matte feel, and a firm, tailored drape. Quite thick, this haori is particularly suitable for cooler days and the changing of seasons.
Lining:
The interior (羽裏 / haura) reveals a crepe-look polyester lining, printed with a Japanese travel scene of a well-escorted nobleman: Mount Fuji, travelers with a samurai and a procession accompanying a traditional palanquin.
Fine gold highlights, likely hand-applied, accentuate the slopes of Mount Fuji and certain details of the scenery.
📏 Dimensions:
Wingspan (sleeve to sleeve): 134 cm
Shoulder-to-shoulder width: 68 cm
Height (shoulder to hem): 89 cm
Our model in the photos, Tôma, is 1m71 tall.
Material:
Exterior: wool blend
Lining: printed crepe-look polyester
Origin:
Japan — likely late Shōwa (昭和) era, found in Kanagawa Prefecture
Condition:
Excellent overall condition. Basting threads are still present, indicating that the haori has likely never been worn (the white basting threads must be carefully cut and removed before wearing the haori). A small spot is visible at the left armhole on the front (see photos).
🦝 Our take:
A sober men’s haori with a beautiful lining. We love its blue-grey color, its discreet kikkō pattern, and its lining depicting a procession traversing the landscape beneath Mount Fuji.
For those looking for a typical late Showa-era haori that is warmer, easier to maintain, and less fragile than silk, this is it!

Care instructions – Haori KOGEDO
Cleaning
- Dry clean only, by a professional.
For silk haori, choose a dry cleaner experienced in handling silk. - Do not wash with water (by hand or machine): traditional dyes may bleed, especially shibori fabrics.
After the port
- After wearing, it is recommended to simply air it on a hanger, away from direct sunlight.
Garment Steaming
- Gentle steam ironing is possible, without direct contact with the fabric.
- Generally, it is not recommended to use a traditional iron. Use a protective cloth between the haori and the iron if necessary.
- For textured haori, do not iron!
Odours
- We preferentially select haori that do not have a strong odor.
- In case of a light odor, a very fine and localized misting, from a distance, of a mild fabric spray suitable for delicate fibers, followed by air drying.
- Always perform a preliminary test on an inconspicuous area
Precautions
- Avoid rain and prolonged humidity.
- Avoid direct sun exposure.
- Avoid repeated rubbing and contact with light-colored textiles.
- Do not spray perfume directly onto the fabric.
