    Description

    Very beautiful old Japanese kakejiku/kakemono, signed Goto Taigetsu 後藤泰月, an active painter during the Shōwa era.

    The artwork depicts a sansui-ga 山水画 landscape, literally "mountains and waters", a major theme in classical Japanese and Chinese painting. In a mist-shrouded valley, a few traditional houses appear among the trees, at the foot of rocky peaks and distant mountains. The scene is silent, almost suspended, with that atmosphere of poetic solitude typical of ink landscapes.

    The painting is hand-painted on silk with a beautiful mastery of wash, suiboku ga style. The effects of bokashi ぼかし, these progressive ink gradations, give a lot of depth to the mist and reliefs.

    The mounting is also very elegant: a traditional hyōsō 表装 in silk brocade, with golden motifs of the kinran 金襴 type, in old rose, beige and gold tones. The central painting, called honshi 本紙, is framed by the chūmawashi 中廻し, with its side strips hashira 柱. We also distinguish the ichimonji 一文字, thin brocade strips placed above and below the artwork. A strong but soft decorative piece, perfect for a Japanese, wabi-sabi, zen or contemporary interior.

    Condition

    Good overall condition for an antique piece.

    The painting is in very good condition, with good legibility of the subject, ink, and signature. The textile mounting shows visible signs of age: the fabric is a bit dry, there are tears in the upper part, and a broken hanging cord. These flaws do not prevent display, but they are part of the antique condition of the piece and are clearly visible in the photos. Handle with care, like any old kakejiku.

    What is a kakejiku?

    The kakejiku 掛軸, also known as kakemono, is a Japanese hanging scroll intended for vertical display. It may feature a painting, calligraphy, or sometimes both.

    Traditionally, the kakejiku is displayed in the tokonoma 床の間, the decorative alcove found in Japanese homes. It is chosen according to the season, occasion, or the atmosphere one wishes to create.

    The central work (honshi本紙i) is surrounded by carefully selected fabrics, creating a harmonious visual balance: the mounting (hyōsō 表装) does not merely serve as a frame; it is an integral part of the artwork.

    Both a decorative and cultural object, the kakejiku is designed to be changed regularly, adding a poetic and evolving touch to the space.
