🧑 The artisan: Okazaki Hitoshi (岡崎斉, 1897–1982)
Born in Naruko in 1897 (during the Meiji era!), Okazaki Hitoshi belongs to one of the oldest lineages of traditional artisans in this Tōhoku region, a hotbed of kokeshi. He developed a typical Naruko school style, recognizable by its slender silhouette, stylized floral patterns painted in vivid red, and serene face highlighted by graphic strands of hair.
Active throughout the first half of the 20th century, he continued to produce after the war and passed on his expertise to his son, Okazaki Seiji (1926–2002), who perpetuated the family tradition. Even today, the workshop is active in Naruko, embodied by the third generation.
This piece is a rare testimony: it bears the artisan's signature accompanied by a precise date — 昭和三十八年十月二十七日, or October 27, 1963.
🦝 We like:
- The large size of 33 cm, which gives this kokeshi a beautiful sculptural presence and real collector's value.
- The magnificent patina typical of old kokeshi
- The vermilion red stylized flowers hand-painted, characteristic of the Naruko style: between chrysanthemums and autumn foliage.
- The very delicate face, with a subtle smile, downcast eyes, full of softness and restraint. The signature of the Okazaki 岡崎 lineage!
- The handwritten and dated signature, a rare testimony to craftsmanship carefully passed down in the same family for over three generations.
This is a pure Naruko, deeply rooted in the living tradition of Tōhoku. If you want a kokeshi with a history that has aged beautifully, this is it!
