    🎨 Description

This handcrafted kokeshi is a superb example of an omiyage doll (お土産 – Japanese souvenir), typical of the domestic tourism boom in Japan during the 1950s–70s.
It stands out with a completely hand-painted decoration depicting a traditional temple nestled in a pine forest, overlooking a stylized river and crossed by a vermilion red bridge.

The whole is accompanied by calligraphic characters in Japanese India ink, in a supple and expressive style evoking a poem or a dedication. This delicate pictorial work, applied on partially raw wood, offers a beautiful tension between nature and culture.

    📚 About Omiyage Kokeshi

Produced in the tourist regions of Tōhoku after the war, omiyage kokeshi were both decorative objects and local souvenirs.
Each piece was often hand-painted on site, featuring an emblematic or idealized place of the region (mountain, waterfall, temple, forest…).

These dolls, now sought after, retain the charm of the Shōwa era while telling a story deeply rooted in Japanese culture.

    🦝 Our opinion

A beautiful, balanced and poetic piece, with a rich decoration and a real visual presence.
    We particularly like:

    • The bright red bridge and the temple in the forest
    • The ink calligraphy which brings depth and mystery
    • And above all, the use of the raw wood bark which gives a rustic and lively feel to the piece.

An ideal souvenir kokeshi for lovers of Japanese landscapes, visual poetry and beautiful signed pieces.
