🎨 Description
This handmade kokeshi is a beautiful example of an omiyage doll (お土産 – Japanese souvenir), typical of the booming domestic tourism in post-war Japan. It was likely made in Akakura, a famous mountain and onsen resort in Niigata Prefecture, as indicated by the red inscription on its back.
The body, partly preserved with its natural birch bark, offers a rustic and textured finish, while the smooth central part features a hand-painted black ink decoration depicting a building nestled in a pine forest at the foot of a mountain.
The hand-painted face, in an expressive style typical of the Showa era, features a traditional hairstyle adorned with orange-red ribbons, flushed cheeks, and downcast eyes with naive charm.
📚 About omiyage kokeshi
Produced in tourist regions of Japan during the 1950s to 1970s, omiyage kokeshi served both as regional souvenirs and popular decorative objects. Each piece, often unique, was painted on-site by local artisans and depicted an iconic landscape of the region: a temple, mountain, waterfall, or onsen.
Often sold in train stations, inns, or craft galleries, they bear witness to an era when popular art accompanied the country's rediscovery by its own inhabitants, in a Japan undergoing post-war reconstruction.
Today, these dolls are sought after for their quaint charm, authenticity, and the traces of a lost Japan they carry with them.
🦝 Our opinion
A very rustic yet poetic piece, where the raw material of wood combines with delicate lines to evoke the landscapes of the Japanese mountains. We love this type of Kokeshi that brings back memories of tourist spots in Showa-era Japan!

By purchasing from Kogedo, you are helping to keep traditional Japanese crafts and culture alive.
