    🎨 About the artisan

Kawamura Shōji (川村 昭治) is an artisan from Miyagi Prefecture, a region renowned for its kokeshi tradition.
Active during the Shōwa era, his work is characterized by vibrant and direct painting, strong expressions, and a keen sense of form.

    The base bears:

    • his handwritten signature in kanji (川村),
    • and his personal seal in katakana (カワムラ).

    🧧 Description

This Daruma kokeshi, carved from light wood and hand-painted, embodies the Daruma figure, a symbol of tenacity, perseverance, and good luck in Japanese culture.

It perfectly illustrates Kawamura's style: an intense and expressive face, energetic lines, and a striking contrast between the raw wood and the vigorously applied red and black pigments.

The gaze is piercing, the eyebrows expressive, the mouth taut — a strong, almost theatrical presence, typical of the characterful kokeshi from the late Shōwa period.

    🦝 We like

    • The expressive energy of the face, carved in a direct and sincere style
    • The vintage painting, bold, with colors still intense despite the decades
    • The living testament to Japanese popular craftsmanship of the Shōwa era

And as Kogechan, our seasoned tanuki says: "A Daruma like they don't make anymore. He judges you, but he supports you."
