🧑🎨 The Artisan: Okuyama Kuraji (奥山庫治, 1934–2008)

Born in 1934 in Hijiori Onsen, Okuyama Kuraji was one of the few great masters of the Hijiori style, a rare kokeshi tradition that is now almost extinct. Son of artisan Kiyoji Okuyama, he took over the family workshop in the 1970s and developed his own “Okuyama” sub-style, recognizable by the Tegara motifs — a red radiating pattern inspired by the Togatta style — which he placed at the top of his dolls.

    🌸 Aesthetic Details:

This large 32 cm kokeshi features a slender cylindrical silhouette, characteristic of the Hijiori style. The turned wood, slightly patinated, reveals a beautiful golden honey hue, typical of local wood species.

    • The face, hand-painted with finesse, and its crescent-shaped laughing eyes show a mischievous but benevolent expression. The "V" shaped mouth with bright red lips is a stylistic mark of Hijiori.
    • The body is decorated with a stylized chrysanthemum motif in profile view

    🦝 We love:

A very beautiful example of the Hijiori style, which is rare today. This piece is signed by Okuyama Kuraji, a key artisan of this confidential style, with his very own sub-style. We adore its heart-shaped mouth!
