    The artisan Mamoru Izu (伊豆護, 1925–2019)

    Mamoru Izu is an important figure in the Naruko lineage, and more specifically of the Ginzan-kei style. Born in 1925 in Ginzan Shinhata, he grew up in a family of wood artisans. His older brother, Izu Sadao, had learned woodturning from Andō Reitarō, but passed away prematurely in 1938. Mamoru Izu therefore largely trained himself in kijibiki, the art of woodturning.

    After the war, he resumed his activity as an artisan in Ginzan, initially making toys, spinning tops, and small wooden objects. His production of kokeshi probably began between the late 1940s and the 1950s. From the 1960s, he studied his brother's works, enriched his motifs, and gradually developed his own forms.

    He is particularly sought after today for his Ginzan Oshin kokeshi, recognizable by their okappa hairstyle, large expressive eyes, subtle softness, and their connection to the world of the famous Japanese drama "Oshin."

    Description

    This Ginzan-kei kokeshi reveals a beautiful balance between the presence of raw wood and the delicacy of the painted decoration. Her face, soberly and gently drawn, expresses a calm, almost dreamy serenity. The black okappa hairstyle is punctuated by a discreet red janome on top. The body reveals the grain and knots of the turned wood, enriched with red chrysanthemums of various quite original styles.

    This Oshin kokeshi style is linked to the character of Oshin, heroine of the cult Japanese TV series from the 1980s. In the series, a similar doll is given to her by her mother, becoming a strong symbol of love, memory, and transmission.
