The artisan: Sato Kazuo (佐藤一夫 1930–2009)

Sato Kazuo was an artisan from Hanamaki (Iwate), trained from 1947 by his father, the sculptor Sato Suekichi.
Coming from a lineage linked to the Nanbu and Naruko traditions, he began with hybrid forms (Nanbu base, Naruko painting) before fully dedicating himself to the Naruko style, which he perfected throughout his career.
A respected artisan, he passed away in 2009 at the age of 80. He is featured in the Kokeshi Guide and several specialized works. He was one of those who revived the ancient Nanbu style after its disappearance.

    🌸 Details:

This Kokeshi embodies the entire Naruko tradition: a slender body, a finely outlined neck, a serene face, and a typical painted hairstyle framed by fine black strands. At the center of the body is a hand-painted hishigiku motif (菱菊), literally "rhombus chrysanthemum".

    🦝 We love:

A very beautiful, well-made traditional kokeshi that exudes great gentleness. And of course, we love its squeaky head, just like a real Naruko!
