    Description

    This kokeshi is a typical souvenir from the Fuji regions, where travelers would buy these small hand-painted pieces after a walk around the lakes.
    The birch body, still partially covered with bark, provides a rustic texture that contrasts with the central scene: a calm and majestic Fuji, reflected in a lake, as seen in Kawaguchi or Saiko.

    The face, simple and expressive, embodies the soft and slightly naive style of 1960s omiyage: red ribbons, pronounced cheeks, peaceful gaze. A kokeshi that captures the magical and almost still atmosphere of these iconic Fuji region landscapes.

    About omiyage kokeshi

    Omiyage kokeshi were sold in train stations, inns, and hot springs across Japan between the 1950s and 1970s.
    Unlike traditional kokeshi, they often depicted an iconic location: mountains, onsen, waterfalls, or, as here, Mount Fuji.
    Each piece was painted locally by artisans, which explains the great diversity of styles and their unique popular charm.

    Today, they are sought after for their spontaneously regional aspect, their simple aesthetic, and the fragment of bygone Japan they convey.
