    The Craftsman: Ueda Izumi 植田和泉

An important and respected figure in sōsaku kokeshi, Ueda Izumi is known for the purity of his forms, his gentle faces, and his very poetic sense of balance.

His work is notably recognized by:

    • sober and elegant lines,
    • a calm, almost melancholic expression,
    • delicate floral decorations inspired by the seasons.

    Details

In this Hōshun creation, Ueda Izumi plays on a very sensitive minimalism.

The face with closed eyes brings great softness. The large, very graphic sculpted hairstyle is topped with a small bun with a red ribbon.

The kimono features small red ume blossoms, as well as engraved leaves that are lightly tinted. The whole evokes the awakening of nature and the arrival of spring.

    Inscription under the base

This kokeshi bears a handwritten inscription that adds a very beautiful historical interest:

    1971. 11. 4
    百合子へ 信好
    於 南紀白浜

    Which means:

    November 4, 1971
    To Yuriko, from Nobuyoshi
    At Nanki Shirahama

Nanki Shirahama is a famous seaside resort in Wakayama Prefecture, known for its white sandy beaches and its onsen. This dedication gives the kokeshi a very personal dimension: that of a souvenir offered during a trip to Japan in 1971.

    🦝 We love

Her very stylish hairstyle, her super peaceful expression, and her charming ume blossoms. We really adore her overall design! And the dedication under the base truly takes us back in time, imagining ourselves in that era on the magnificent Nanki Shirahama beach, just like in a Japanese drama!
