    Kawamura Shōji is a Japanese sōsaku kokeshi artisan associated with Miyagi Prefecture, a major historical region for kokeshi in Japan.

    His sought-after work is distinguished by sober and very graphic compositions, often built around a beautiful contrast between natural wood and deep colors.

    His works notably feature:

    slender silhouettes,
    a sharp contrast between natural wood, red, and black,
    plant decorations such as Japanese bamboo here.

    Details

    The face with delicate eyes gives a gentle and reserved expression. The round head, made of natural wood, is decorated with a stylized black hairstyle with small red ribbons.

    The body is painted with a warm red, animated by wood-colored bamboo and wide black bands. The ensemble evokes the suppleness, straightness, and vitality of bamboo in the Japanese imagination.
