    Ishida Tomio is a famous Japanese artisan from Gunma Prefecture, one of the major centers of modern and creative kokeshi in Japan.

    His work belongs to the world of kokeshi sōsaku 創作こけし, a movement in which artisans break free from the codified forms of traditional Tōhoku kokeshi to freely explore the silhouette, decor, and expression of wood.

    Ishida Tomio's known creations are particularly distinguished by their soft faces and original shapes and their floral compositions.

    Details

    This kokeshi by Ishida Tomio is a rare model by the artisan.

    Its slightly tilted head and face with closed eyes, simply drawn with a few lines, give it a peaceful and dreamy expression. Her pretty bun is accompanied by a small red kanzashi that adds a touch of color.

    The light wood body is covered with white and orange chrysanthemums, accompanied by leaves and small gilded touches. The hearts of the flowers and some elements of the foliage are also enhanced with gold, which subtly catches the light.

    The decor is concentrated on the front and sides, while the back largely reveals the natural wood and the turning work.
