    🧑🎨 The artisan: Sansaku Sekiguchi (関口三作, 1925–2018)

    Recognized as one of the greatest masters of sōsaku kokeshi, Sekiguchi Sansaku was the only artisan to officially receive the title of "Master of Creative Kokeshi" in Japan. Trained in traditional Japanese painting (nihonga), he began turning wood in the 1950s and devoted himself fully to creative kokeshi from 1958.

    His works blend innovative forms, contemporary expressiveness, and minimalist elegance.
    This kokeshi, with its red floral furisode (luxurious long-sleeved kimono) and separately sculpted sleeves, is typical of his most recognizable production. It embodies all the tenderness of his style — faces with peaceful gazes, balanced compositions, and exceptional care in execution.

    His family workshop is still active today in Shibukawa, with his children and grandchildren.
