The craftsman: Fujikawa Masae 藤川正衛, known as Shōei
Fujikawa Masae, also known by his artist name Shōei, is a renowned Japanese master of sōsaku kokeshi, born in 1942 in Gunma Prefecture, a major region for modern kokeshi production.
He began his apprenticeship in 1959 with Ishida Kanji 石田完治, an important figure in creative kokeshi from Gunma, before becoming independent and founding Fujikawa Kōgei 藤川工芸 in 1962 in Shibukawa.
His long career is marked by numerous national distinctions. Fujikawa notably received two Japanese Prime Minister's Awards, in 1996 and 2002, as well as several awards granted by ministries and competitions dedicated to contemporary crafts and kokeshi. His work is still documented in major Gunma competitions in the 21st century.
His creations are often recognized by their very refined faces, elegant female silhouettes with black okappa hairstyles and very colorful kimonos with floral or seasonal motifs.
Details
This kokeshi by Fujikawa Masae presents a sober and very chic silhouette, dominated by a large wooden sculpted okappa hairstyle, topped with a small rounded bun.
The round face is treated with great simplicity: a few black lines for the eyes, a small red mouth and a soft and reserved expression typical of many sōsaku kokeshi.
The natural wooden body is decorated with plum blossoms ume 梅, accompanied by thin branches engraved in the wood. The decoration remains deliberately discreet to allow the nuances, grain and natural patina of the wood to show through.
On the back, the vertical inscription 妙高々原 – Myōkō Kōgen designates the mountainous region of Myōkō, in Niigata Prefecture, known for its landscapes, hot springs and ski resorts. The old spelling 妙高々原 suggests a probable dating of this kokeshi to the 1960s.
The very sober style of our kokeshi differs significantly from Fujikawa's more colorful and more common creations. This aspect reinforces the hypothesis of early production.
🦝 We like
A very beautiful vintage sōsaku kokeshi by Fujikawa Masae alias Shōei, one of the great masters of the modern Gunma school.
We love its simplicity and raw wood, very different from Fujikawa's more classic kokeshi, it truly exudes something serene and joyful, without frills!
A master sosaku kokeshi, ideal for sōsaku kokeshi collectors, lovers of vintage Japanese craftsmanship and those looking for an authentic Japanese wooden doll signed by a recognized artist.
