    The artisan: Kisaku (季作)

    Kisaku (季作) is a kokeshi sōsaku artisan whose pieces are highly sought after today, yet almost no biographical information is available about him.
    One of those artists recognized more for their works than their history — A mystery!

    His name, 季作, can be translated as “creation of the seasons”.

    His kokeshi are distinguished by:

    • frequent use of wood engraving
    • particular attention to kimono patterns
    • a play of textures that gives relief to simple shapes

    One often finds designs that evoke nature and the seasons, in a style that is both understated and very lively.

    Details

    The face is simple with a gentle expression and a lovely smile that gives it a very cute look.

    The dense, black okappa-style hairstyle, typical of creative kokeshi, creates a strong contrast with the natural wood.

    The kimono here is entirely made with engraving. The patterns are carved into the material, which gives relief and catches the light differently depending on the angle. This is where the piece truly shines.

    The patina is beautiful, natural, with just enough signs of age to remind us that this is a true antique piece.
