    This Japanese omiyage kokeshi is a very beautiful piece signed 香村, made by Sato Kôson 佐藤香村, a creative kokeshi and souvenir artisan from Fukushima. Its decoration pays tribute to Mount Bandai 磐梯山, an emblematic mountain in the Aizu 会津 region, depicted here in a sober and poetic style.

    The body retains a beautiful appearance of raw textured wood, evoking bark and mountainous landscapes. On the central part, the ink painting in sumi-e 墨絵 style depicts a Japanese landscape with mountains, a tree, calligraphy, and a white waterfall. The contrast between the brown tones of the wood, the black ink, and the white touch gives the piece a lot of depth.

    The face is very gentle, with a calm and childlike expression typical of omiyage kokeshi. The round head, black hairstyle, and hand-painted motifs enhance its popular and authentic charm.

    About Sato Kôson 佐藤香村

    Sato Kôson is one of the rare female artisans recognized in the world of sosaku creative kokeshi and souvenir kokeshi. Based in Fukushima, she is appreciated by collectors for her very soft faces and her expressive pictorial approach.

    Her works are often recognized by their confidently painted decorations: sumi-e landscapes, autumn leaves, camellias, chrysanthemums, bamboos, and sometimes Japanese zodiac characters. Even on an omiyage kokeshi, this sensibility is found here: a simple, yet very evocative decoration.

    Omiyage Kokeshi

    Omiyage kokeshi were sold as artisanal souvenirs in tourist regions of Japan, especially near mountains, temples, hot springs, and famous places. They often evoke a specific landscape, a city, or a travel memory.

    This piece linked to Aizu and Mount Bandai retains this precious dimension: that of a popular Japanese object, at once decorative, regional, and deeply nostalgic.
