    Description

This large 36 cm kokeshi omiyage is a souvenir from Shuzenji (修善寺), a famous temple and hot spring resort on the Izu Peninsula. Its imposing silhouette is made from shirakaba (white birch) wood, a portion of which has natural bark preserved, giving the piece a rustic look characteristic of Japanese regional souvenirs from the Shōwa era.

Its decoration is particularly interesting: it depicts Yasha-ō (夜叉王), the mask maker at the heart of the shin-kabuki play Shuzenji Monogatari, written by Okamoto Kidō. Seated before his work, he is shown carving wood, accompanied by his sculpting tools.

In the story, Yasha-ō receives an order for a mask representing Minamoto no Yoriie, a former shogun retired in Shuzenji. Unable to give his work a truly lively expression, he instead perceives the appearance of a condemned man, foreshadowing Yoriie's tragic fate.

This kokeshi thus goes beyond a simple tourist souvenir: it combines traditional Japanese craftsmanship, local history, and kabuki theater!

    About kokeshi omiyage

Kokeshi omiyage were popular souvenirs sold in hot spring resorts, tourist towns, and pilgrimage sites in Japan, particularly during the Shōwa era. Unlike traditional kokeshi from Tōhoku, they could adopt much freer forms and decorations.

Some depict a landscape or a local specialty; others, like this Shuzenji kokeshi, directly reference the history and culture of the place. Today, they serve as beautiful testaments to Japanese tourism of yesteryear and its folk art.

    🦝 Our opinion

A large Japanese kokeshi that is truly out of the ordinary! With its 36 cm height, its wood with visible natural bark, and especially its decoration dedicated to Yasha-ō and Shuzenji Monogatari, it truly stands out!

A beautiful piece for lovers of vintage kokeshi, Japanese culture, kabuki, or simply for those looking for an authentic Japanese wooden doll with a particularly rich history.
