    Description

    This souvenir kokeshi pays homage to Zao Onsen (蔵王温泉), a famous hot spring resort in Yamagata Prefecture, nestled in the volcanic landscapes of Mount Zao. This iconic Japanese location is renowned for its hot springs, spectacular mountains, and magnificent caldera, offering a powerful and deeply poetic natural setting.

    Its body of raw Japanese birch retains a beautiful organic presence, with its natural bark and characterful irregularities. The hand-painted decoration, on a deep black background, depicts Mount Zao in white, accompanied by a calligraphed poem. The black and white contrast is superb, very elegant, and the painting is particularly well executed.
