The Artisan: Ogura Kōichi 小椋宏一 (1931–2003)

Born in 1931 in Kijiyama, Akita Prefecture, Ogura Kōichi came from a major lineage of the Kijiyama school. Son of Ogura Kyūtarō, he trained in woodturning at a very young age and dedicated his life to making kokeshi bodies.
In accordance with Kijiyama practices, he rarely painted his pieces himself, with painting often entrusted to painters associated with the workshop. He actively participated in the continuity of this tradition until the end of the 20th century and passed away in 2003.

    Details

This kokeshi is made from a single block, typical of Kijiyama. The face exudes a calm and soothing expression. The body is decorated with ume plum blossoms, a symbol of renewal, painted in red and black. The wood's patina is clearly visible on the back. Under the base, inscriptions from a very probable reseller indicate an acquisition date: 2004, a selling price at the time of ¥10,000, the wood used: mountain cherry 山桜, and the artisan's lineage: Ogura Kyūshirō 小椋 久四郎 (grandfather) and Ogura Kyūtarō 小椋 久太郎 (father).

    🦝 Our Opinion

A large Kijiyama-style kokeshi, a format not often seen! We really love her kimono with its plum blossoms. The Kijiyama style is always so elegant and original!
