The artisan: Onodera Masanori (小野寺正徳, 1948–2018)
Born on June 13, 1948, in Kawatsura (Akita Prefecture), Onodera Masanori comes from a lineage of traditional lacquerware artisans (蒔絵師). He is the son of Onodera Tokuichi, who himself inherited a family connected to the great names of Kijiyama craftsmanship.
After his studies, he first worked in the family lacquerware business, then trained in woodturning before dedicating himself to making kokeshi from 1965, under the tutelage of his father.
His work fully embodies the Kijiyama tradition, characterized by slender forms, great simplicity, and a strong connection to woodworking techniques. He continued this practice throughout his life, also training artisans in turn.
Over the years, his style evolved towards more refined pieces, with more controlled painting and particular attention to forms and traditional motifs.
Details:
This large Kijiyama kokeshi features a typical slender silhouette, with a realistically proportioned head and a delicately drawn face, with fine and serene features.
The top of the head is adorned with a red ribbon motif, while the black hairstyle elegantly frames the face, in a sober style characteristic of this school.
The kimono, typical of Kijiyama, is decorated with ume plum blossoms and an igeta (井桁) motif, a traditional Japanese geometric pattern inspired by the structure of ancient wells, symbolizing stability and balance.
On the back, the artisan's signature confirms the authenticity of the piece.
🦝 We love:
A large signed Kijiyama kokeshi, made by a recognized master craftsman from a long traditional lineage!
We particularly love the calm and serenity it exudes, as well as the igeta motif on its kimono! A very beautiful kokeshi!
