The artisan Satō Hideichi (佐藤秀一, 1927-2009)

Satō Hideichi was born on August 7, 1927, in Kawatsura, Akita Prefecture. Son of Satō Kaneichi, he belonged to an important lineage of woodturners and Kokeshi artisans from the Kijiyama school.

He first learned bowl turning from Koseki Hisatarō, then worked in several workshops in Akita. Around 1968, when his father fell ill, Hideichi began making Kokeshi before continuing this activity with him, then alone after 1981.

Known for the precision of his antique reproductions, he notably created Taiichirō-gata, Shibata Tetsuzō-gata and Hiwatashi Jiichi-gata as seen here.

    Description

This Kokeshi reproduces the Hiwatashi Jiichi-gata 樋渡治一型, a historic model from the Kijiyama school by the artisan of the same name. Its decoration of wide red and black horizontal stripes is reminiscent of Waseda University rugby jerseys, hence its Japanese nickname of "rugby Kokeshi".

The cylindrical body in a single piece is typical of Kijiyama and largely reveals the natural wood, punctuated by red, black, and green stripes. The shape of its head and body are particularly bold, making this style immediately recognizable.

The Kokeshi is signed 佐藤秀一 on the back and bears the inscription 治一型, clearly confirming the model.

    🦝 Our opinion:

A super original Kijiyama! We love its astonishing "rugby Kokeshi" look with a rugby player's nose that has taken some hits!

A truly rare and authentic collector's item, made by an artisan who is no longer with us. This Jiichi-gata signed Satō Hideichi really stands out from the more classic Kijiyama and will appeal to collectors and lovers of Japanese folk art alike.
