The Artisan Arakawa Yōichi (荒川洋一, 1938–)

Arakawa Yōichi is an artisan from the Tsuchiyu-kei lineage, associated with the Nakanosawa style. Born on November 13, 1938, in Aizu-Wakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, he first trained in turned wood at Kamiyama Mokkojo, under Kamiyama Noboru.

In this workshop, he produced various tourist souvenirs, including hula dancing dolls for the Jōban Hawaiian Center. In 1970, wishing to dedicate himself to traditional kokeshi, he became a student of Iwamoto Yoshizō in Nakanosawa and began producing models in this tradition.

From 1972, he deepened his study of the ancient forms of Iwamoto Zenkichi, with particular attention to turning, brush movement, dyes, and the wood surface. This journey anchored his production in the demanding heritage of traditional Japanese kokeshi from Fukushima.

    Description

This Nakanosawa-kei kokeshi is a fine example of this family with its slender silhouette. The face reflects the spirit of the Nakanosawa tradition, but with a gaze different from the classic bikkuri type, which is often rounder and surprised. Here, the eyes are finer, elongated, slightly oblique, giving the doll a soft, lively, and very personal expression.

The main decoration shows a superb 牡丹 botan peony, hand-painted with great skill. The red petals, outlined with a flexible black line, elegantly occupy the center of the body and give this kokeshi all its charm.

The hairstyle features the janome (snake eye) motif at the top of the head, an emblematic detail of many Nakanosawa kokeshi.

    🦝 Our opinion:

We are big fans of the Nakanosawa style, and this one is superb! It is particularly interesting for its gaze. Its eyes do not follow the classic bikkuri type: they are finer, more oblique, and really give it style! We also love its beautiful botan peonies, very well made. A signed piece, full of charm, ideal for collectors and lovers of Japanese folk art!
