The artisan Okazaki Seishi (岡崎斉司, 1926–2002)

Okazaki Seishi was born on February 5, 1926, in Naruko Yumoto, Miyagi prefecture. The eldest son of Okazaki Hitoshi, he began painting kokeshi at school and later learned traditional woodturning from his father.

After serving in the navy during the war, he returned to Naruko and worked for a long time alongside his father. Active in the post-war period, he participated in collector gatherings and served as president of the Naruko woodworker cooperative for five years. He passed on his knowledge to Hayasaka Akiyasu and his son Okazaki Seiichi. His work follows his father’s forms, with a predilection for chrysanthemums.

    Description

This Naruko-kei kokeshi clearly illustrates the work of Okazaki Seishi, with its long, slightly tapered body and round head mounted using the traditional hamekomi (insert) technique. The head can be turned and produces the characteristic squeak of Naruko kokeshi, caused by the friction of the wood.

Its refined face features hitoe-mabuta (single-eyelid) eyes drawn with a simple stroke, long arched eyebrows, and a nekobana (literally "cat nose"). A small red mouth accentuates its soft and peaceful expression.

The body is decorated with a hishigiku motif, a large chrysanthemum in a diamond pattern seen from the front, which is characteristic of Naruko kokeshi. The back highlights the woodturning. The kokeshi is signed under the base by Okazaki Seishi.

    🦝 Our assessment:

A very beautiful 28 cm Naruko by an artisan from a recognized, long-standing Naruko Onsen lineage. It presents all the classic characteristics of Naruko and perfectly illustrates this lovely style of traditional kokeshi. A beautiful piece signed by Okazaki Seishi for those who love Naruko and kokeshi with character.
