    📐 Features:

    • Origin: Japan, Sakunami (Miyagi Prefecture), found in Kanagawa Prefecture.
    • Period: Shōwa Era, circa 1960s–1990s
    • Style: Sakunami-kei (作並系), Dentō kokeshi (伝統こけし)
    • Artisan: Hiraga Tadashi (平賀忠, 1937–2000)
    • Material: Hand-painted turned wood, natural finish

    • Motifs: wild apple blossoms ズミの花（酸実の花）, typical of Sakunami
    • Signature: black ink calligraphy under the base (artisan's signature)
    • Condition: Very good vintage condition – even patina, no notable defects.

    The Artisan: Hiraga Tadashi (平賀忠, 1937–2000)

    Born on September 28, 1937 in Sakunami (Miyagi), Hiraga Tadashi was the eldest son of Hiraga Tazō. His father went to war in 1941 and died in Guadalcanal in 1943: Tadashi never had the opportunity to learn directly from him.

    After graduating from Hirose College in 1953, he began an apprenticeship in woodturning at the age of 17 with Kobayashi Seitarō in Yamagata. In 1956, he joined his uncle Hiraga Kenjirō's workshop in Sakunami, then started making kokeshi in 1957. In 1967, he opened his own workshop, next to Kenjirō's. He passed away on December 7, 2000 (aged 64).

    Aesthetic details:

    This Sakunami kokeshi embodies elegant simplicity:
    A peaceful face with half-closed eyes, finely and balanced drawn. Deep black hair, with red touches on the temples. Slender cylindrical body, vertically decorated with ズミの花 (wild apple blossoms), an emblematic Sakunami motif. Light wood, carefully turned, soft grain, simple and harmonious finish.

    🦝 We like:

    A Dentō kokeshi signed by an important artisan of the rather rare Sakunami style. Fun fact: Hiraga Tadashi's kokeshi had a thin base and were therefore, in his early days, not very popular with tourists because they lacked stability! (typical Japanese!)
