🧑 The artisan: Takeda Shinkichi (武田信吉, 1921–1994)

An eminent member of the Yamagata and Sakunami lineage, Takeda Shinkichi was born in Tendō on September 23, 1924.
Second son of master Takeda Usaburō, he moved to Yonezawa at a very young age and joined the family workshop to learn turning from his father.

After the war, in 1946, he resumed his craft and developed his own style at the crossroads of Sakunami tradition and Yamagata influences. In 1953, upon his father's death, he inherited the workshop and founded his own lineage. His son Shinichi would in turn become an artisan around 1986, thus perpetuating the family tradition.

In 1978, he received the first prize of the All-Japan Kokeshi Competition in Shiraishi, a supreme recognition of his art.
Takeda Shinkichi passed away in 1994, leaving behind a body of work marked by the delicacy of line and the purity of wood.

    🌸 Aesthetic details:

This Sakunami-kei style kokeshi perfectly embodies the softness and sobriety of Tohoku:

    • Oval and peaceful face, with half-closed eyes and thin lips, evoking silent serenity.
    • Stylized dark black hair, framed by red petals hand-painted on the temples. Typical black central line of Yamagata and Sakunami styles.
    • Slender and cylindrical body, decorated with stylized red flowers arranged vertically, typical of post-war Sakunami style.
    • Light, polished, and well-carved wood, revealing soft and luminous grain, a symbol of purity in Japanese craftsmanship.
    • Simple and balanced finish, true to the search for harmony that characterizes the Takeda lineage.

    🦝 We love:

A signed piece by a recognized master of the Sakunami style, rare on the European market. This model is almost identical to the one that allowed him to win the national competition in 1978! This kokeshi has real historical value!
