The minimalist and gentle face embodies the serenity characteristic of Japanese kokeshi, and the modernity of the shingata style.

    About the artisan

Kiyohara Takao (清原たかを) is one of the great names in 20th-century kokeshi. Born in 1916, he dedicated his life to the art of woodturning and painting.
Known for his original and refined creations, mainly in the shingata 新型 style, he won several awards in kokeshi competitions in Japan.
His pieces are now sought after by collectors for their finesse and unique personality.

Specifics of the Shingata 新型 style

Shingata kokeshi, which appeared after the war, are distinguished by their creative freedom. Unlike traditional regional styles (dentō kokeshi), they allow for a variety of shapes and patterns, designed to appeal to a wide audience, particularly the Japanese souvenir market.

    🦝 Our opinion:
This large kokeshi is a typical model by Kiyohara Takao, combining the mastery of an award-winning artisan and the charm of the Shingata style. It is a beautiful example of post-war Japanese craftsmanship, both decorative and steeped in history. It has a very modern style and its patina gives it a lovely head!
