    The artisan: Ryō saku 良作

    This kokeshi is signed Ryō saku 良作, an artisan whose red stamp appears under the base. He remains little documented, but his kokeshi can be found on the collectors' market, both in shingata 新型こけし pieces and in sōsaku 創作こけし kokeshi.

    His name is sometimes transcribed Ryosuke, according to some sources encountered.

    Peculiarities of the Shingata 新型 style

    Shingata 新型こけし kokeshi, also called "modern" or reinterpreted kokeshi, appeared in post-war Japan, when artisans began to move away from strictly traditional regional forms to propose freer silhouettes, while retaining the fundamentals of kokeshi: turned wood, hand-painted decoration, and great expressive sobriety.

    Kasane giku 重ね菊 motifs

    This kokeshi features a superb kasane giku decoration: superimposed chrysanthemums painted in red, green, and yellow.

    The yellow placed in the heart of the flowers, but also in the hairstyle, brings a lot of light. It highlights the motifs, softens the face, and gives the whole a very refined presence.
