This resolutely modern kokeshi is a work signed by Katsumi Sasaki 佐々木 克巳, a master artisan who founded his own workshop in Shiroishi, Miyagi Prefecture, in 1948. After learning the art of woodturning and painting upon his arrival in Shiroishi, he developed his own bold and graphic style.

The shingata (新型こけし) style, or "modern kokeshi," is a transitional style that emerged after the war, in which artisans began to move away from traditional regional forms, while retaining classical bases. Unlike sōsaku (creative) kokeshi, the shingata style remains rooted in a certain artisanal rigor, with reproducible shapes and identifiable decorative elements.

Today, the Sasaki workshop is still active: it is run by his son Isao Sasaki, recognized as one of the last great modern kokeshi artisans in Japan. Accompanied by his wife Miho, Isao perpetuates this art by creating unique pieces, many times awarded nationally.

    🦝 Our opinion:

A modern kokeshi full of character, with a graphic style typical of the Sasaki workshop. We particularly like the stylized plum blossoms finely carved into the wood. The minimalist expression of the face, very soft, combined with regular stripes, gives this piece a beautiful modernity.
