    Description:

    This elegant kokeshi is a work signed by Takafuji Yūkichi 高藤勇吉, also referenced as Saitō Yūkichi 斎藤 勇吉, a prolific artisan active during the rise of modern kokeshi in Japan after World War II, probably in the 1960s.

    The shingata (新型こけし) style, or "modern kokeshi," emerged in post-war Japan when artisans began to revisit traditional forms. While retaining the turned wood technique and the fundamental codes of kokeshi, these pieces introduced more audacious graphic compositions and a more contemporary aesthetic.

    This piece is distinguished by its superb diamond chrysanthemum motif: hishigiku (菱菊) painted in deep black on the body, creating a very elegant contrast with the light wood. The minimalist face is particularly charming, in a freer style.

    🦝 Our opinion:

    A very classy shingata kokeshi, perfectly balanced between tradition and modernity (cliché but true!). We particularly like the depth of the black. The face, with its expressive eyebrows giving the illusion of four eyes, gives it a lot of personality. A beautiful shingata kokeshi, in very good condition, ideal for a collection or to bring a touch of authentic Japanese craftsmanship to an interior.
