    The artisan: Takeshi 武志

    This kokeshi is signed Takeshi 武志, a Japanese artisan whose signature appears under the base, hand-painted in black ink. He remains mysterious with very little information about him.

    His work is part of the world of shingata kokeshi 新型こけし, also called "modern" or reinterpreted kokeshi. This trend appeared in post-war Japan, when artisans began to move away from strictly traditional regional forms to offer freer silhouettes, while retaining the fundamentals of kokeshi: turned wood, hand-painted decoration, and great expressive sobriety.

    Here we find a beautiful combination:

    A beautiful shape in a Naruko/Sakunami style,
    a round head with a soft and stylized face typical of shingata kokeshi,
    a very well executed floral decoration around the Japanese camellia tsubaki 椿,

    Label 全日本こけしコンクール

    This kokeshi still has its original label from the 全日本こけしコンクール, the All Japan Kokeshi Contest, organized in Shiroishi.

    The central mention 優秀品 means excellence prize or excellence product. At the bottom of the label, 入賞作品 indicates an award-winning work.
