    The artisan: Aoki Ryōka (青木蓼華)

Aoki Ryōka (青木蓼華), born in 1931 in Gunma prefecture, is a major figure in sōsaku kokeshi, recognized as a “Contemporary Master Artisan” (現代の名工).

Trained in nihonga painting, she developed a personal style that she applied to kokeshi from the late 1950s. Her work, awarded numerous prizes including several Prime Minister's Awards, is distinguished by great finesse of execution and a rare pictorial sensibility.

Despite losing sight in one eye, she pursued an exceptional career spanning more than fifty years and played an important role in transmitting this art.

Her emblematic work “Hinagiku” (雛菊) is particularly famous: in 1969, during a visit to Gunma prefecture, Empress Michiko (then Crown Princess) noticed this kokeshi and acquired it, contributing to its renown.

    Her kokeshi are characterized by:

    • delicate faces inspired by Japanese painting
    • particular attention paid to expression, especially the eyes
    • a soft and poetic elegance, almost timeless

    Details

The face is finely painted, with closed eyes and a peaceful expression, characteristic of Aoki Ryōka's sensitive work. The hairstyle is modern and precisely traced.

The body is decorated with hinagiku (daisy) motifs, an emblematic theme of the artist, treated with simplicity and elegance on natural wood.

On the back, the calligraphic inscription “Unzen Onsen” evokes the famous Kyushu onsen, a place linked to the history of our piece.

    🦝 We like

A kokeshi with a very serene and super cute expression, by a great artist. This “hinagiku” model is iconic of creative kokeshi and steeped in history, everything we love at KOGEDO!
