From his workshop in Yoshioka (Gunma), Kojo Tanaka (田中晃常) crafted this creative kokeshi (sōsaku) of about 15 cm: a refined body, neatly drawn hair, and a delicate decoration of plum blossoms (ume), a symbol of renewal. The entire piece is turned, painted, and hand-finished, in the artisanal spirit that characterizes the Kojo Kokeshi workshop.

Kojo Tanaka (田中晃常), whose real name is Tanaka Shigemi (田中重巳), took over the family workshop created in 1968 and highlights 100% manual work and the use of local mizuki (Japanese dogwood). He has been recognized with several awards: at the All Japan Kokeshi Contest and the Modern/Shingata Kokeshi Contest.

The stylized petals, the contrast between dark solid areas and light touches, and the softness of the face give this Japanese doll a sober and poetic presence. The mizuki enhances the roundness of the shape and the precision of the patterns.

    🦝 Our opinion
A very elegant and modern sōsaku: the plum blossoms and its kimono collar are magnificent and give it a Geisha style that we love. It is an easy piece to place at home, perfect for starting a collection or offering a good luck charm signed Kojo Tanaka.
