The artisan: Satō Tomio (佐藤富雄 1928–2016)
Sato Tomio is a major artisan of the Togatta school, born in Togatta-Shinchi into a family of wood turners. Initiated at a very young age by his father Sato Bunsuke, he patiently trained in lathe work and traditional painting. Before the war, he was already making turned wooden objects, then his first kokeshi, recognizable by their great simplicity.
After the conflict, he resumed his activity in Togatta Onsen, working for a long time alongside his father and brother. Committed to the continuity of savoir-faire, he passed on his teachings to several artisans, including Kesakichi Sato. He then pursued a solitary and rigorous production until his health problems worsened, before passing away in 2016.
🌸 Details:
This kokeshi features all the hallmarks of the Togatta style: a slender and stable silhouette, a well-proportioned head, a peaceful face with controlled lines, and hair decorated with the Tegara motif. The body is decorated with Kasane giku (重ね菊), superimposed chrysanthemums painted by hand, in the particular style of Sato Tomio.
🦝 We love:
An authentic Togatta kokeshi, signed by a master artisan of renown. We particularly love the wood grain on her face! It's also very appreciated to have a precisely dated kokeshi: a 54-year-old girl! Made in 1972, when Tomio Satō was 44 years old. She embodies a specific moment in his career and the history of kokeshi.
