The artist Satō Eitarō (佐藤英太郎, born in 1939)
Satō Eitarō was born on August 13, 1939, in Tōgatta Shinchi, Miyagi Prefecture. As the eldest son of Satō Shūichi, who died during the war in 1944, he did not receive full training from him. Raised in a family of kijishi (woodturners), he worked at the family lathe from middle school onwards.
Returning to Tōgatta in 1958, he perfected his technique under Satō Mamoru, his father's cousin, and studied the forms of his grandfather, Satō Naosuke. After several years in Kawasaki, he returned in 1969 and resumed making kokeshi. In 1980, he opened his boutique-workshop, "Mokume."
His work belongs to the Shūjirō lineage of Togatta. Eitarō is associated with the models of his grandfather Naosuke and their mokume decor, emblematic of this family.
Description
This kokeshi features a characteristic Togatta silhouette, with a long, straight body topped by a large head. The face is drawn with futae-mabuta eyes (double eyelids), a finely defined ware-bana nose, and a small red mouth that gives it a cheerful and mischievous expression.
The body features a mokume 木目 pattern, painted in red to evoke wood grain.
The head is adorned with a red and black tegara (headband), which is beautifully displayed across the forehead and top of the head.
Under the base, the inscription 直助型 英太郎作 means "Naosuke model, made by Eitarō." It links this piece to the forms passed down by his grandfather, Satō Naosuke, the creator of the mokume decor.
🦝 Our opinion:
A superb Togatta kokeshi by Satō Eitarō, as a tribute to his grandfather! We love its cheerful face, its tegara, and especially that red mokume pattern which gives it so much style and originality! It’s not every day you come across kokeshi like this one!
An authentic kokeshi ideal for collectors and fans of folk art, Japanese decor, and Tōhoku craftsmanship.
