The Artisan: Ōnuma Shōji / Onuma Shoji (大沼昇治, 1932-1998)

Born on May 17, 1932, in Nanokahara, Katta District, Miyagi Prefecture, Ōnuma Shōji grew up in a farming family. After school, he initially helped his father before training in woodworking from 1949 with Satō Fumio in Togatta Shinchi.

In 1951, he opened a carpentry workshop in Kosugō, Shiroishi City, with Andō Isamu. There, he mainly turned components for Western furniture before returning to Togatta Shinchi in 1956 to learn traditional kokeshi from Satō Jirō.

From the late 1960s, he developed a very personal body of work centered around the ancient forms of the Satō family, particularly those of Satō Enkichi. His kokeshi, inspired by old models but reinterpreted with great freshness, are highly sought after today by collectors of dentō kokeshi.

    Details:

This 25 cm kokeshi is in the pure Togatta lineage; its head is adorned with a red tegara pattern, arranged in broad radiating bands around the top of the skull. This traditional decoration is typical of the Togatta tradition. Its face has delicate lines: elongated eyes, arched eyebrows, a small central nose, and a discreet mouth.

The body is decorated with kasanegiku patterns, which are stacked chrysanthemums painted in red on the natural wood.

Under the base, the handwritten Kanji signature 遠刈田 昇治 confirms a Togatta kokeshi made by Ōnuma Shōji, an important artisan of this lineage and heir to in-depth research into ancient forms.

    🦝 We love:

A very beautiful Togatta kokeshi signed by Ōnuma Shōji, with a superb balance between simplicity, patina, and tradition.

We adore its peaceful face, typical of Onuma Shoji's work!
