The craftsman: Sakuta Kōichi (作田孝一, born 1935)

Born on November 11, 1935, in Togatta Onsen, Sakuta Kōichi is the son of Sakuta Takashi, from whom he learned woodworking at a very young age. From junior high school, he was already at the lathe, before officially training after his studies at the family workshop.

In 1953, he set up his own business with his father and began producing his own pieces. From 1957, he dedicated himself to making old-style kokeshi (旧型), while perpetuating traditional turning techniques.

His work is fully in line with the Togatta tradition, characterized by slender forms, expressive faces and codified decorations. He is recognized for the quality of his paintings and the finesse of his motifs.

    Details:

This large Togatta-style kokeshi features a typical slender silhouette, topped with a head decorated with the tegara (手絡) motif, an emblematic element of this school, recognizable by its radiating forms around the top of the skull.

The body is richly decorated with finely executed colored bands, demonstrating great mastery of the craft. At the front, there is a cherry blossom (桜, sakura), a symbol of spring and ephemerality in Japanese culture.

At the back, two butterflies (蝶, chō), rarer on kokeshi, are traditionally associated with lightness, transformation and the spring season.

    🦝 We like:

A large signed Togatta kokeshi, made by a craftsman rooted in tradition, with exquisite execution and great mastery.

Of course, we love the Sakura flower in the center and the bonus with the butterflies at the back! A true spring beauty!
