The artisan Satō Yoshiaki (佐藤好秋, 1906–1991)

Satō Yoshiaki was born on November 20, 1906, in Tōgatta Shinchi, Miyagi Prefecture. He was the son of master artisan Satō Matsunoshin and grew up in a family of woodturners. From 1919, he learned the trade from his father while continuing his schooling.

In 1923, while working in Zaō Takayu, he painted his first kokeshi. After working with several other artisans, he opened his own workshop in Tōgatta in 1933 and trained several apprentices, including his son Satō Kōichi. From the mid-1960s, he focused mainly on the painted decoration of the dolls.

Faithful to the Tōgatta tradition passed down by his father, he is renowned for his brush-drawn floral motifs.

    Description

A highly recognizable Tōgatta: slender silhouette, cylindrical body, and a lovely round head. The smiling face features futae-mabuta (double-eyelid) eyes, a ware-bana nose split into two lines, and a discreet little black mouth.

On the body are pretty eda ume (枝梅) plum blossom branches, with flowers and buds drawn in an elegant, geometric style.

As for the hairstyle, it features radiant black hair, painted with bold brushstrokes around the top of the head.

Beneath the base, we find Satō Yoshiaki's signature and his age, 71, which corresponds to 1976 according to the traditional kazoedoshi system.

    🦝 Our take:

A very beautiful Tōgatta kokeshi by master Satō Yoshiaki, which stands out with its stylish plum blossoms! We love the contrast between the natural wood and the black paint, and this elegant geometric design! And we always enjoy being able to date a kokeshi precisely: 1976, a beautiful testament to Japanese craftsmanship of the 1970s.

An authentic Japanese doll to give to collectors of dentō kokeshi as well as lovers of vintage Japanese decor and Tōhoku folk art.
