The artisan: Inage Yutaka 稲毛豊, 1929–1985

Inage Yutaka was an important artisan of the Tsuchiyu tradition, born in Iizaka, Fukushima Prefecture. Before becoming a kokeshi kōjin, he reportedly worked as a cook, then requested to apprentice with Watanabe Kihei, whose workshop was near his home.

He began his woodturning training in 1972, then made his first kokeshi the same year. In 1974, he became independent and devoted himself fully to his work. He quickly distinguished himself with his restorations and interpretations of ancient Sabako kokeshi, managing to recapture their spirit with great accuracy: fluid features, lively expression, and balanced design. He would be considered one of the best, if not the best, creator of the Sabako type. His career was unfortunately short, as he passed away in 1985, at only 57 years old.

    🌸 Details:

This kokeshi features the markers of the Tsuchiyu-Sabako universe: a slender body, a round head with a gentle presence, a finely drawn face, and a sober floral decoration of red, black, and natural wood. The top of the head is adorned with the janome 蛇の目 motif, "snake's eye," formed by concentric black circles. It exhibits a beautiful antique patina.

    🦝 We love:

A very beautiful dento Tsuchiyu kokeshi signed by Inage Yutaka, a rare artisan, recognized as the best of the Sabako-gata style. We particularly love its very well-made face and the originality of the Sabako style. An ideal piece for a collection of original items or for a sensitive and warm Japanese decoration or a Japanese gift.
