The Artisan: Watanabe Chūzō (渡辺忠蔵, 1921–2008)
Born in 192iyu Onsen, Watanabe Chūzō belongs to a lineage of kokeshi artisans from the Yamane-ya family. Grandson of master Watanabe Sakuzō, he inherited a deep connection to the woodworking tradition.
After a youth spent between agricultural work, sericulture, and mobilization during the war, he returned to Japan in 1946. He then trained in woodworking before becoming an independent artisan in 1963.
Supported by collector Tsugio Shikama, he revisited old models like Sabako and Sakuzō, while developing a personal style. His work is recognized for its fidelity to the Tsuchiyu style and especially for its very expressive faces.
Today, his kokeshi are sought after for their strong presence and their balance between tradition and personality.
Details:
This kokeshi features the codes of the Tsuchiyu style: a cylindrical body adorned with red bands, and a head marked by a janome (蛇の目) pattern, the snake's eye.
The face, particularly well done, is typical of Watanabe Chūzō: fine and very expressive features.
The two small chips on the face attract the eye without detracting from the aesthetic. On the contrary, they give it character.
🦝 We love:
A large, signed Tsuchiyu kokeshi, made by a major artisan, with real character. The typical face of Watanabe Chūzō is particularly expressive here. And with these small chips that look like scars, it has a "Scarface" side, almost badass! A kokeshi that has lived!
A collector's item as well as a strong decorative object, ideal for an interior sensitive to wabi-sabi and Japanese authenticity.
