The Craftsman: Yasuaki Katō (加藤保明, born in 1938)

Born on January 27, 1938 in Fukushima Prefecture, Yasuaki Katō is the third son of Kato Hide. He became a disciple of Andō Mirei, an artist renowned for his painting and coloring skills, and then began making kokeshi dolls.

As his master was primarily a painter, it is not precisely known from whom Katō learned wood carving, but he gradually developed his practice in the Tsuchiyu tradition, one of the historic kokeshi styles of the Fukushima region.

His works are distinguished by expressive and balanced painting, combined with simple and elegant forms. Katō's dolls are now sought after for their graphic finesse and their fidelity to the traditional aesthetics of Dentō Kokeshi.

    Details:

This kokeshi deviates from the most classic Tsuchiyu markers, usually characterized by circular decorative bands covering a large part of the body. The body here is decorated with an iris motif, less common in kokeshi iconography, where chrysanthemums or plum blossoms are more frequently encountered.

The face is finely traced with a brush. The double-lidded eyes (futae-mabuta) are drawn with marked lines that almost evoke a discreet eyeliner, accentuating the soft and contemplative expression of the face.

    🦝 We love:

A Tsuchiyu kokeshi signed by a renowned craftsman from the Fukushima region. We particularly love its uncommon iris motif, as well as its eyeliner which gives it the look of an Egyptian doll!

A very beautiful handcrafted piece for a kokeshi collection, to offer as a gift or simply to decorate an interior inspired by Japanese aesthetics.
