🧑🎨 The Artisan: Watanabe Sadami (1917–1994)
Born in Tsuchiyu Onsen (Fukushima) into a family of wood artisans, Watanabe Sadami began turning kokeshi in the late 1960s after learning the trade from his brother Watanabe Toru, a major figure in the Tsuchiyu style. Heir to a solid family craftsmanship, he dedicated himself to restoring the charm of pre-war kokeshi while adding a personal touch: expressive faces, slender lines, and a delicate balance between simplicity and softness. His creations, made during the Shōwa era, embody the tranquil elegance of the Tsuchiyu-kei style and remain highly sought after by collectors.
🌸 Aesthetic details:
This 21 cm kokeshi, dated 1969, perfectly illustrates the Tsuchiyu style of the Shōwa years:
- Large and rounded head, adorned with a red Janome (蛇の目, “snake eye”) motif at the top, typical of kokeshi from this region.
- Very elegant futae-mabuta style eyes and pretty long nose nagabana.
- Slender cylindrical body, decorated with concentric red, blue/green, and purple bands, alternating with stylized motifs evoking leaves or petals (hana-gara).
- Wood patinated to a light honey hue, original varnish well preserved.
The inscription under the base, 「土湯 渡辺定巳 作 五二才」, indicates that this is a work created by Watanabe Sadami at 52 years old, in the heart of his most creative period.
