    The artisan Ogura Katsushi (小倉勝志, born in 1947)

    Ogura Katsushi was born on November 22, 1947, in Yajirō, Miyagi Prefecture. Son of Ogura Atsushi, he learned woodturning from his father during the winters, starting in the mid-1960s.

    After Atsushi's passing in 1968, he continued farming while making kokeshi, encouraged by his family. He worked with Satō Tatsuo starting in 1971, then became independent in 1974. Heir to the Ogura lineage, he adopted the forms of his father, his grandfather Kasaburō, and master Ōno Eiji.

    The ume kokeshi style, created by Ōno Eiji, was passed down in the Ogura family to Atsushi, then to Katsushi.

    Description

    This kokeshi features the typical Yajirō form, with a body that evokes a kimono cinched by an obi. This well-defined waist gives the piece a lot of elegance and highlights its large round head. Its delicate face features fine arched eyebrows, elongated eyes, a well-defined nose, and a tiny red mouth, for an impassive expression and demeanor!

    The body is decorated with a superb ume 梅 motif, where red plum blossoms and buds surround a black branch painted with an almost calligraphic energy. This floral decoration stands out magnificently against the light wood.

    The top of the head bears a janome 蛇の目 motif, formed by concentric red, ocher, and dark purple circles. The black fringe, red side ornaments, and vertical strands harmoniously frame the face. The doll is signed under the base by Ogura Katsushi.

    🦝 Our opinion:

    A superb Yajirō kokeshi! We absolutely love its deep patina, which reveals the nuances of the wood and naturally tells its age. We also adore the magnificent ume flowers and the calligraphic branch! We really like kokeshi from the Ogura lineage and particularly this ume-kokeshi style. It is a signed and precious piece for kokeshi collectors and lovers of Japanese folk art.
