The artisan: Hamazu Heisaburo (浜津平三郎, born 1933)

Born on August 8, 1933, in Fukushima Prefecture, Hamazu Heisaburo belongs to the renowned Yajirō lineage. In 1949, he became an apprentice to Sanai Niyama, a key figure in the school, who was then active in Shiroishi.

His journey is closely linked to the workshop of Yashiro Tetsuen, another recognized master of the Yajiro style. In 1956, he married Tamura Chiyoko, Tetsuen's sister-in-law, who would herself become an heiress to the family style. Faithful to tradition, Hamazu in turn trained Satō Koichi starting in 1957, then introduced his wife to painting in the 1970s.

    Details:

This large 37 cm kokeshi exhibits the strong characteristics of the Yajirō school: a long body with red and black circular bands, a large head topped with a Janome (snake eye) motif, and a delicately brush-painted face with eyes featuring a single eyelid line, hitoe mabuta.

The balance between the roundness of the head and the verticality of the body is particularly successful here. The motifs remain minimalist, allowing the natural grain of the wood to show through. The handwritten kanji signature on the back is very well calligraphed and adds a beautiful touch.

    🦝 We like:

A large signed Yajirō by a renowned artisan of the lineage. We particularly appreciate its antique patina, its simplicity, and the proportions and shape of its body and head.
Its 37 cm size makes it a striking piece, ideal for a collection or Japanese decor.
