    The artisan Ishikawa Tokujiro (石川篤次郎, 1915-2005)

    Ishikawa Tokujiro was born on December 13, 1915, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. After his studies, he worked in construction before learning woodworking from Niiyama Fukutaro, a master of the Yajirō tradition, starting in 1948.

    In April 1950, he left construction and set up as an independent artisan in Shiroishi, dedicating himself from then on to making kokeshi. Around 1970, he undertook the restoration of the forms passed down by his master Niiyama Fukutaro.

    His work follows the Niiyama lineage inherited from his master; his kokeshi maintain a very ancient and traditional style.

    Description

    This kokeshi displays a classic Yajirō-style shape, with a slender body cinched at the waist and a large, round head. Its face, also typical, is drawn with hitoemabuta (一重瞼) eyes—single eyelids—a bachibana nose, and a small mouth made of two lips marked with red.

    The body evokes a yellow kimono with red and purple decoration. The original yellow has faded, revealing the light-colored wood beneath. Circular red and purple bands emphasize the waist and accentuate the traditional Yajirō shape.

    The top of the head is decorated with a janome (snake-eye) pattern, composed of concentric red and black circles.

    Inscribed on the base is: Yajirō-kei, Ishikawa Tokujiro, 57 years old. According to the traditional Japanese kazoedoshi (数え年) counting method, which counts one year at birth and adds a year every New Year, this mention allows us to precisely date the kokeshi to 1971.
