The craftsman Ishikawa Tokujiro (石川篤次郎, 1915-2005)
Ishikawa Tokujiro was born on December 13, 1915, in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture. After his studies, he worked in construction before learning woodworking from Niiyama Fukutaro, a master of the Yajirō tradition, starting in 1948.
In April 1950, he left construction and set up as an independent craftsman in Shiroishi, dedicating his activity from then on to the manufacture of kokeshi. Around 1970, he began to restore the forms handed down by his master Niiyama Fukutaro.
His work is in the Niiyama lineage, inherited from his master, his kokeshi maintain a very old and traditional style.
Description
This kokeshi features a classic Yajirō style form, with an elongated body tightened at the waist and a large round head. Its face, also typical, is drawn with hitoemabuta (一重瞼) eyes, with a single eyelid, a bachibana nose, and a small mouth composed of two lips punctuated with red.
The body evokes a yellow kimono with red and purple decoration. The original yellow has faded, revealing the light wood. Red and purple circular bands emphasize the waist and accentuate the traditional Yajirō shape.
The top of the head is decorated with a janome 蛇の目 motif, composed of red and black concentric circles.
Under the base is inscribed: Yajirō-kei, Ishikawa Tokujiro, 57 years old, which allows the doll to be precisely dated between 1972 and 1973.
🦝 Our opinion:
A very beautiful Yajirō kokeshi from 1972-73! We like the respect for tradition here. It has a very beautiful patina and we love it when the craftsman leaves his age and allows us to precisely date the doll!
An authentic piece ideal for kokeshi collectors and lovers of traditional Japanese decor and craftsmanship.
