The Artisan: Abe Tsunekichi 阿部常吉 (1904–1991)

Born in 1904 in Atsumi Onsen, Yamagata Prefecture, Abe Tsunekichi is a major figure of the Atsumi sub-lineage. Trained at a very young age by his father, Abe Tsunematsu, he perpetuated and developed a style originating from Tsuchiyu, enriched with Aone and Zao Takayu influences. Active from the Taishō era until the end of the Heisei era, he produced kokeshi continuously, actively participating in their post-war boom. A recognized and respected artisan, he passed on his knowledge to several disciples, including his eldest son Abe Shinya. He passed away in 1991 at the age of 88.

    Aesthetic Details:

This kokeshi features an expressive face typical of Atsumi, with large round eyes bikkuri-me びっくり目 that give it a lively and endearing presence. The tarebana nose 垂れ鼻, elongated and slightly drooping, brings a naive softness characteristic of this sub-lineage. The generous head harmoniously contrasts with the slender body, while the simple and rhythmic red floral decoration highlights the natural warmth of the wood.

    🦝 Our Opinion:

We love her wide, round eyes and long nose. It looks like she's been caught red-handed after doing something mischievous! These are the typical features of the Atsumi style and the Abe family. This kokeshi was made by an artisan who passed away more than 30 years ago!
