The Craftsman Kimura Yusuke (木村祐助, 1924–2019)

Kimura Yusuke is a renowned craftsman of the Zao Takayu lineage, associated with the Yamagata region. Born in Kaminoyama, he learned woodworking from his father and master, Kimura Kichitarō. He signs his kokeshi with the characters 木村祐助, even though his official first name was spelled differently.

After the war, he trained in kijibiki, woodturning, but his production remained limited for a long time. He engaged in several activities, notably around public baths, a tea room, and then managing a taxi company. He also became a municipal councilor, which regularly took him away from the lathe and explains the relative rarity of his pieces.

His style incorporates Kichitarō's late legacy, with delicate faces, a gentle expression, and finely drawn peonies 牡丹 (botan).

    Description

This Zao Takayu-kei kokeshi features a body shape typical of the Zao style: slender silhouette, defined waist, stable base, and well-proportioned rounded head. The face is painted with characteristic features: a warebana nose with two divided lines, futae-mabuta double-lidded eyes, arched eyebrows, and a small, discreet red mouth.

The floral decoration shows two peonies, one closed and one wide open, particularly beautiful. This double peony motif is emblematic of Kimura Yusuke's style.

On the back are the signature 木村祐助作, the inscription 上山温泉 Kaminoyama Onsen and 七十七才 77 years old. Under the base, the date H13 11 21 indicates November 21, 2001.

    🦝 Our opinion:

Zao kokeshi are rarer and this one is particularly beautiful. We love its shape, its deep reds and its two hand-painted peonies! A beautiful authentic piece, signed by a renowned craftsman, dated, for collectors and lovers of Japanese folk art!
