The artisan: Satō Kesakichi (佐藤今朝吉, 1930–1998)
Born in Togatta Onsen on March 1, 1930, Satō Kesakichi was the second son of a geta maker. Drafted in 1943 in Tokyo, he returned at the end of the war and joined the family workshop. In 1953, he trained in turning with Takahashi Hirohei, then set up his own lathe at home. It was under the direction of master Satō Tomio that he began making traditional kokeshi dolls from 1958.
Rather than strictly copying the style of his masters, Kesakichi forged a free aesthetic, typical of Togatta souvenirs from the Shōwa era, as perfectly illustrated by this Kokeshi.
He then passed on his knowledge to his son Yasuhiro, thus continuing a lineage of craftsmanship.
🦝 We like:
The magnificent red plum blossoms (ume) finely hand-drawn: a seasonal motif, delicate, vibrant, and of rare mastery.
The radiant "tegara" patterns in red around the head, emblematic of the Togatta style, which give a great graphic strength to the whole.
This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful Togatta kokeshi we have had at KOGEDO, an absolute favorite for both classic kokeshi enthusiasts and seasoned collectors.

By purchasing from Kogedo, you are helping to keep traditional Japanese crafts and culture alive.
