🧑 The craftsman: Abe Kazue (阿部計英, 1937–2017)

Master of the Tsuchiyu-kei style, Abe Kazue came from a prestigious lineage of wood craftsmen. Born in Tsuchiyu Onsen in 1937, he was the son of the famous Abe Hiroshi and grandson of Abe Kinzo. He learned turning from childhood before officially becoming his father's apprentice in 1955. He thus maintained a unique style blending ancient tradition and modern softness.

After his father's death in 1984, Kazue continued his work solo, creating kokeshi with balanced forms, serene faces, and meticulously drawn patterns. He stopped producing in 2007 due to health reasons but still made a few pieces around 2016. This kokeshi, dated 2004, is therefore one of his last accomplished creations, marked by beautiful artistic maturity.

    🌸 Aesthetic details:

This 36 cm Japanese kokeshi, made in Heisei 16 (2004), embodies the quintessential Tsuchiyu style:

    • Large, well-rounded head, adorned with the Janome (蛇の目, “snake’s eye”) motif with concentric red and black circles.
    • Delicately painted face, with almond-shaped eyes in futae-mabuta style and a meditative expression.
    • Stylized hair framed by pretty red ribbons, a distinctive element of the Abe lineage.
    • Slender body with a sober and powerful decoration: wide red bands, thin blue lines, and a purple crosshatch pattern (reminiscent of certain traditional textile patterns from Tōhoku).

    🦝 We love:

A late work by a great master, rare and collectible. We love the perfect alliance between the rigor of the Tsuchiyu style and a sensitive personal interpretation. Finally, its large and imposing size, perfect for decorating an interior.
